The apartment complex that I live in is next to an arboretum. Some evenings I like to wonder around the grounds, watch the ducks swim in the creek, hear the bugs chirp and sometimes I catch a glimpse of one of the elusive deer that call this place home. As lovely as all of that is, that is not the reason why I love this place. I love it for a rather odd reason which is, the smell. A short way down the road is a spice factory (on Spice Lane, no less) at night you can smell whatever spice that they are producing that day. Sometimes you’ll smell the sweet scent of cinnamon, or catch a whiff of black pepper. Some nights it’s strong, some nights it’s subtle but either way it really adds a lot to the experience of being outside. The best is when you smell the wild onions that are under your feet and then the distance smell of a sweet spice not too far away. It’s a very unique experience that I try my best to savor.
These photos were taken on a night not too long ago while I was taking a walk, enjoying all of the outdoor sights and smells.

I love hiking in the woods, or on a beach. I knew that there was an arboretum, I just never knew where it was. Aren’t you lucky to live near there and the spice factory. I try to always drive by there with my car windows down – to catch the scents…
